IWD Twitter Space 2023

Marked annually on March 8, International Women’s Day (IWD) is a day set aside to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also provides an opportunity to call attention to the issues of women’s rights and to advocate for the acceleration of gender parity.

This year, the global campaign theme for IWD is Embrace Equity. However, in line with its priority theme for the upcoming 67th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW-67), the UN Women has adopted the theme, “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”. The aim is to ‘explore the impact of the digital gender gap on widening economic and social inequalities’ and to ‘spotlight the importance of protecting the rights of women and girls in digital spaces and addressing online and ICT-facilitated gender-based violence’.

The topic of this Twitter Space discussion is, ‘How does Technology Advance Gender Equality?’ The discussion is a semiformal one, aimed at generating insights and drawing the attention of attendees to ways that digital and information technology can either increase the gender gap or ultimately lead to the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
